no matter what

Styrofoam on Cardboard

40cm×30cm

This piece is inspired by the fragmentations of memory. The cutouts are silhouettes of a group of friends who were there for me, although they did not know what I was going through, their patience and inclusion greatly helped me. I wanted to pay homage to them while creating a reminder that no matter where people are, the memories shared will always connect us.

Preliminary sketches & Idea Development

Inspired by the fragmentations of memory. Each photo was taken by me personally, depicting the people who brought light to me when I was in a dark place during COVID-19. Although most of them did not know what I was going through, their understanding, patience and inclusion, helped me more than anything, inspiring me to pay homage to this group of people, despite us not being as close as we were. The art was to act as a reminder that no matter where we are, we will always be connected even by the smallest of things. The neutral grey as the background was to show that the setting of where we are does not matter. Even if we are no longer as close as we used to be. The moments we had together will forever be a bond between us.

The photos on the styrofoam cutouts

All the photos picked out were in darker tones in order to contradict the side of the styrofoam which is white in colour. I had tried 2 different ways of pasting the photos onto the styrofoam cut-outs; first was to cut the photos after I stuck it onto the styrofoam and the other was to trace the styrofoam shape onto the photo, cut it then stick it on the styrofoam. I found the second method was more efficient and gave me a cleaner looking outline as compared to the first method.

spend a day in the studio with me (start at 3:49 to watch me finish this)
